Certified organic produce is the consumers guarantee that the produce you receive is actually grown, harvested and stored using organic production methods only. A variety of certification bodies exist in British Columbia and around the world and their rules differ slightly but are based on the California standards created in 1990. For example, in the Lower Mainland, most organic growers are certified through the British Columbia Association for Regenerative Agriculture (BCARA). To become certified, most farmers must go through a 3-4 year transitional period from conventional to organic production. BCARAs regulations specify what types of substances farmers can use on the farms, land use and buffer zones etc. Farmers must also keep a log of farming activities and these are reviewed every year by the association. If you would like more information about certification, please check out this web-site. http://www.certifiedorganic.bc.ca Sometimes we include transitional produce in your box. This will be clearly marked on your invoice as T1, T2 etc. This means that the farmer is within the certification process and following all the rules and regulations but has not yet been organic for the full 3 or 4 years (depending on the certification body). We want to support transitional farmers when possible because it is quite risky for farmers to go organic and purchasing their products helps support them with this transition.
